Finding Open Access or Creative Commons Images

Open Access image icon from noun project Locating and using openly licensed, creative commons, or public domain content is a great alternative to requesting permissions or doing a fair use analysis on copyrighted images or other educational content. The following sites are a good starting point for your search:

Google Image Search
Be sure to use the Tools >> Usage Rights options to filter to content that is "Labelled for Reuse."

Be sure to use the License filter to locate Creative Commons or other reusable material.

Many cultural heritage institutions are contributing digital images to Flickr. The Smithsonian, Brooklyn Museum, the Getty, and Library of Congress are just a few of them.

Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Collections
Presents thousands of digitized images of varying sizes from the Prints & Photographs Diviison of the Library of Congress. Diverse content includes baseball cards, Japanese-American internment (Ansel Adams), African-Americans, architecture, posters, and much more.
New York Public Library Digital Collections
Full-Text. Coverage: Various
Digitized items in the NYPL collections. Includes printed materials, photographs, maps, manuscripts, video, and more. Includes 700,000+ digital images from the diverse collections of the New York Public Library archives.
Oregon Digital
Oregon Digital is an extensive repository for digital items created by the libraries at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Included are almost 100 individual collections covering a variety of subjects scanned from diverse original formats.
