APA Citation Guide, 7th edition: Motion Picture

About Citing Audiovisual Media

For each type of source in this guide, both the general form and an example will be provided.

The following format will be used:

In-Text Citation (Paraphrase) - entry that appears in the body of your paper when you express the ideas of a researcher or author using your own words.  For more tips on paraphrasing check out The OWL at Purdue.

In-Text Citation (Quotation) - entry that appears in the body of your paper after a direct quote.

References - entry that appears at the end of your paper.

Information on citing and several of the examples were drawn from the APA Manual (6th ed.).

Numbers in parentheses refer to specific pages in the manual.

Motion Picture/Video Recording (p. 209)

General Format 
      In-Text Citation (Paraphrase): 
      (Director Surname, Year)
      In-Text Citation (Quotation):
      (Director Surname, Year, Timestamp)
Director Surname, First Initial. Second Initial. (Director). (Year). Title of movie [Film; Format information if needed e.g. Motion picture, Streaming video or DVD]. Production Company. URL if viewed online
       In-Text Citation (Paraphrase): 
      (Davidson, 1999)
       In-Text Citation (Quotation):
      (Davidson, 1999, 5:15)
Davidson, J. (Director). (1999). B. F. Skinner: A fresh appraisal [Film]. Davidson Films.
  • List the primary contributors in the author position and use parentheses to identify their contribution
  • For an episode from a television or radio series, use the same format as for a chapter in a book, but list the script writer and director in the author position and the producer in the editor position.
